The Mac Mini

Can’t say I much cared for the new Intel Mac mini when I first read over the specs, but it’s been slowly growing on me the more I think about it.

I guess, like mostly everyone else, I felt the machine was underpowered, and I can’t say I’m very happy with integrated graphics OR the $100US increase. Problem is, I’m very much in the hunt for a new Mac, the Powerbook is my favourite computer ever, but it’s illsuited to some of my more esoteric tasks. I had been looking forward to the announcement of the Intel mini, but my initial reaction was not positive, if only due to the collective disgust pouring out from the Apple faithful. Everybody, it seems, was disappointed with it.

But, a little bit of time and I’m revisiting the idea of getting one. Most of the complaints about the video card seem to be about how it takes memory away from the system (72mb total), but add a GB of memory and there’s really no problem. The real problem is the price, it’s practically impossible to justify over saving a bit more and buying a used Power Mac from some poor sap.

I feel your hesitation. I’d eventually like to replace my current Mac and when I do I want to make sure I get the most for my dough. It’s all about timing and staying informed. I know you got my back man, don’t let me do anything foolish.

The new minimacs are being hailed by critics as the first “true” home entertainment computer. Meaning you can take this thing, hook it up to a big screen tv and good speaker system and you can watch all your movies, listen to all your music and do all your computing from one ready made system. True that can be said of just about any computer, but lets face it, PCs aren’t very friendly to non computer geeks. And with a low price and a super easy to use operating system, this system is going to start an awsome new trend in home entertainment which will only get better. I am seriously contemplating getting one of these just for that purpose alone.

Nuno: Whenever you call me, I’ll be there.

Billy: If I was just looking for a media center computer, this little box would be first on my list, Front Row is a great and simple way to access your data.

Even with wanting more power, I’m still considering them against the Powermac. Either way, It’s a nice choice to have to make. ;-)
